What Are Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids — also called piles — are cushions of tissue containing blood vessels, muscle, and connective tissue located in the lower rectum and anal canal. In their normal, healthy state they help with bowel control, particularly fine-tuning closure of the anal sphincter.
